Electric trucks created in Washington, Tyne & Wear are today on the roads of Washington DC. Four major US corporations and two utility companies took delivery of the Smith Newton, the largest road-going electric truck in North America. Newton was launched in the UK by Smith Electric Vehicles in 2006.

The company claims its Tsutsumi plant in Japan is one of five Toyota global Eco-Factories worldwide that are designed to minimise the environmental impact and develop best practices for adoption elsewhere. To ensure only as much power is used as needed, energy saving lighting has been installed and patrols are carried out to monitor usage.
