When the first Honda Insight and Toyota Prius hybrids launched in 1999 and 2000, expectations for their sales were low. And hybrids indeed logged annual sales in the low thousands until the second-generation Prius came along for 2004.

Based on the final Trends data through MY 2012, CO 2 emissions have decreased by 85 g/mi, or 18%, since MY 2004, and fuel economy has increased by 4.3 In MY 2012, for the 11 manufacturers shown, Mazda had the lowest fleet-wide adjusted composite CO 2 emissions and highest adjusted fuel economy performance, followed by Honda.

A PHEV with only a 20-mile all-electric range is 62% lower (see printed page 95 in the 2004 study ). The high demand for the Honda Civic hybrid tell us its at least $3,000. CalCars produced the worlds first plug-in Prius (the PRIUS+) in 2004. The GREET 1.6 These are "features" -- and no one asks about the payback.
