A study by the University of California, Riverside College of Engineering Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) found that a Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Agency (Metro) bus equipped with an ultra-low emission natural gas engine performs significantly cleaner than its certification standards across all duty cycles.

The US EPA estimates the normal fleet turnover rate for a line-haul locomotive can take 30 years or more. BNSF has been operating four liquefied natural gas yard locomotives in downtown Los Angeles since the mid-1990s. Union Pacific operates in 23 states west of Chicago, while BNSF Railway is present in 28.

Mercedes-Benz presented the new B-Class F-CELL, its first (limited) series production fuel-cell powered electric vehicle available in the US ( earlier post ), at the Los Angeles Auto Show. There are currently five public hydrogen filling stations in the greater Los Angeles area, with four more due to open by the end of 2010.
