Toyota plans to introduce 10 new hybrid models between now and 2012 in various global markets, with sales of one million gas-electric hybrids per year, worldwide, sometime early in the next decade. Toyota launched of the Prius in late 1997 in the Japan market, and in the US in July 2000.

The all-new hybrid transaxle adopts improvements first used in previous post-2004 Toyota/Lexus hybrids such as the Camry hybrid, Highlander hybrid, and Lexus RX 400h, as well as refinements not previously employed. Toyota: When the Toyota Prius originally went on sale in 1997, it was the world’s first mass-produced hybrid car, meaning the Japanese automaker effectively stole a march on its rivals. The vehicle scooped the Car of the Year award in Japan in its debut year, and the third generation of the model took the prize again in 2009.
