The first such vehicles were introduced by Volkswagen in 2003, and by 2004, they accounted for more than 17% of the Brazilian auto market. The Model T Ford, which debuted in 1908, was originally designed to operate on alcohol. In 2005, their sales increased even further, accounting for approximately 54% of all new car sales.
