In 2017, emissions from GHG emitting activities statewide were 424 million metric tons of CO 2 equivalent (MMTCO 2 e), 5 MMTCO 2 e lower than 2016 levels and 7 MMTCO 2 e below the 2020 GHG Limit of 431 MMTCO 2 e. A study by a team of researchers from China and the US has shown that shipping emissions in East Asia accounted for 16% of global shipping CO 2 in 2013, compared to only 4–7% in 2002–2005. The total number of vessels observed in 2013 in this region is 18,324.

The resulting new national standards will cover model years 2012-2016, and will require an average fuel economy standard of 35.5 mpg in 2016 (39 mpg for cars, 30 mpg for trucks), or approximately 250 grams CO 2 /mile.
