SolarCity has unveiled a smart energy storage system to address rising utility demand charges and increasing grid outages affecting businesses. Utilities have increased revenues faster than electricity usage in part by creating “demand charges” for businesses that have increased their share of the utilities’ cost burden.

A UPS-led consortium has deployed new smart-grid charging technology in London that overcomes the challenge of simultaneously recharging an entire fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) without the need for the expensive upgrade to the power supply grid. A key part of this initiative is the use of onsite energy storage batteries.

Agassi's project focussing on the infrastructure side with its talk of charging points and battery swapping has long struck me as interesting, well-intended, but suffering from some misconceptions endemic to those who think about this stuff but don't drive an electric car.
