The plant, formerly the Michigan Truck Plant and the production site for Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigators SUVs, is one of three North American light truck plants Ford is retooling to build fuel-efficient global small cars in the coming years. As part of the retooling, Ford will consolidate its operations from Wayne Assembly Plant.

It was expected to function in a similar fashion to the Scion brand with a compact, mid-size and SUV model. More hybrid parts will be used in the Malibu Hybrid for example - a Chevrolet vehicle - a clear sign that there is consolidation, and with it a united green front, throughout the industry.
