For Portland-based businesses, however, the next step is to take advantage of the Oregon EV incentives at the state and local level.

Both state and federal governments are encouraging businesses and individuals to start making the switch to EVs, and they are putting up the funds to make it happen — in the form of generous, aggressive EV charging infrastructure tax credits. And good news — this tax credit has been extended through 2021.

Another three are on the West Coast and in Hawaii: Seattle (4), Portland (5), and Honolulu (6). Georgia has a tax credit worth up to $5,000 for zero-emissions vehicles. Illinois provides a $4,000 state tax incentive for purchases and reduced registration fees. Oregon has a Chief EV Officer to promote EV use.

However, the upfront costs associated with purchasing an EV and installing charging infrastructure can be a barrier for many individuals and businesses. According to statistics from Portland General Electric, the average annual fuel cost for an electric vehicle is approximately $500, compared to around $1,500 for a gasoline-powered vehicle.
