Multiple recent studies have shown that in the real world, plug-in hybrids pollute much more than their labels would indicate – though still less than pure-fossil vehicles – both because they overstate their capabilities in electric-only mode and because people simply don’t plug them in. The problem is… that doesn’t happen.

Mild hybrids, which are typically found in 48 volt electric systems, do not require a plug to operate. PHEVs can run as electric vehicles in cities, significantly reducing tailpipe pollution. Plug-in hybrids are essentially a halfway point between full hybrid and fully electric automobiles.

General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform. See Chevy Volt for latest. Now Lutz envisions selling hundreds of thousands of Volts a year, probably priced below $30,000. I want to stick around to see the Volt come to market.
