Toyota Australia appears certain to add a petrol-electric hybrid to the new-generation Prado 250 Series SUV line-up as soon as this year. The eagerly anticipated new heavy-duty large off-roader launches mid-2024 with an updated mild hybrid version of its predecessor 150 Series’ 2.8-litre litre turbo-diesel engine.

A replacementbattery pack for the American Tesla sports car, which comprises 6,831lithium-ion laptop cells, is $22,000 (£15,000). It ispleasingly quick but will still only manage 150 miles between charges, muchless than a tank of petrol, even if it costs only £1.50 to charge overnight.
