Researchers led by the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have extended the capacity and duration of sodium-aluminum batteries. The new sodium-based molten salt battery uses two distinct reactions. The team previously reported a neutral molten salt reaction.

Molten Salt Gasification Process. Western Hydrogen Limited reported first production of hydrogen from its Molten Salt Gasification (MSG) pilot plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The MSG process occurs in a single high-pressure reactor in which a carbon-based feedstock and water react with a molten salt bath.

Hexana aims to implement a fast neutron and sodium-cooled reactor, integrating a high-temperature storage device. This installation will be based on a set composed of two small reactor units (400 MW th each) supplying a heat storage device, useful to best manage the variations in electrical power needed by industries.

The team is tuning this process so that it can be used to recycle any type of cathode materials used in lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. The work was published in Advanced Energy Materials.

GE Energy Storage Technologies, a unit of GE Transportation, introduced its Durathon sodium-metal halide battery ( earlier post ) for critical backup power. The battery can be used in uninterruptible power supply (UPS) applications for large data centers, hospitals, and other areas where a continuous supply of power is necessary.
