The Toyota Highlander Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle – Advanced (FCHV-adv) ( earlier post ) achieved an estimated range of 431 miles on a single full tank of compressed hydrogen gas, and an average fuel economy of 68.3 miles/kg (approximate mpg equivalent) during a day-long trip down the southern California coast.

Protean Electrics retrofitted through-the-road plug-in hybrid van showing significant fuel economy gains

The vehicle is being shown for the first time in North America at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminar, 1–4 Aug. In addition, Protean added a 21 kWh battery pack, giving the vehicle more than 55 miles (90 km) of electric propulsion range and plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle capabilities.
