MG 1 starts the gasoline engine and charges the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery, while MG2 drives the front wheels and regenerates the battery during braking and coasting, and MGR drives the rear wheels and also regenerates the battery. Toyota’s goal was to reduce the cost, weight and volume of the pack from the NiMH system used earlier. The engine also uses an electrically driven air conditioning compressor and water pump to reduce mechanical losses. In place of a spare tire, the Prius Plug-in carries a tire-sealing kit and inflator.

Use the existing and growing base of hybrids, offer kits to authorized installers, and give ZEV credit to the original manufacturer in exchange for not killing the car's warranty. They are beginning to do crash testing, and will meet emission requirements, in pursuit of a fully legal, compliant vehicle. Let the people convert!

Even so, most next gen EV manufacturers are focused on lithium ion (and to a lesser extent NiMH) as the core technology to power their cars. More often than not, the “recycling&# of NiMH or lithium-ion batteries involves shipping them off to places like China, where their fate is truly unknown.
