And in a true smart grid, electric cars will not only be able to draw on electricity to run their motors, they will also be able to do the reverse: send electricity stored in their batteries back into the grid when it is needed. In effect, cars would be acting like tiny power stations. but not all of it.

And, you have to recognize that they pull a hell of a lot of power through the local grid: there will come a time when we will see utility transformers popping from all the current being drawn (imagine just a few dozen EVs fast-charging simultaneously, on 480V at 500A: wow).
