It''s not uncommon for small cars to get 40 mpg these days, or hybrids to hit 50 mpg. Elio Motors claims its three-wheeled car does 84 mpg on the highway, far exceeding that of any car on sale. But vehicles doing more than that are conspicuous by their absence.

Elio Motors, the start-up developing a $6,800, 84-mpg- (2.8l/100 100 km) three-wheeled vehicle with a target date of 2016, unveiled its engine prototype: a 0.9-liter, The Hybrid III standard crash dummy approximates an average North American male, about 5''9" tall and weighing approximately 172 lbs (78 kg).

The MP3 hybrid. The Piaggio Group has introduced the MP3 Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid version of its MP3 three-wheeled scooter. With a grid-chargeable Li-ion battery pack, the Piaggio MP3 Hybrid reduces both fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50%. Energy flow in the MP3 Hybrid.
