The US Department of Energy will award 73 grants totaling $72 million to 68 small businesses in 24 states. Small businesses that demonstrated technical feasibility for innovations during their Phase I grants competed for funding for prototype or processes development during Phase II. Lithium ions are stripped from the anode during discharge and form lithium polysulfides in the cathode. Li 2 S in the cathode is the result of complete discharge. The grants will go to projects in 17 states. Electrofuels approaches will use organisms able to extract energy from other sources, such as solar-derived electricity or hydrogen or earth-abundant metal ions.
