Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced $10 million in research grants to spur production of biofuels, bioenergy and biobased products that will lead to the development of sustainable regional systems and help create jobs. Vilsack highlighted the announcement with a visit to Michigan State University, a grant awardee.

The Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance ( NARA ) will hold its first annual meeting in Missoula, Mont., Created in fall 2011, the alliance is led by Washington State University and primarily funded by a $40-million, five-year Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grant from the USDA-NIFA.

With four ethanol plants in the Western United States including California, Oregon and Idaho, Pacific Ethanol’s facilities have the combined ethanol production capacity of 200 million gallons per year. The Stockton, California plant was built in 2008 and has the capacity to produce 60 million gallons per year.

The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced $55 million in grant selections through the Low or No Emission (Low-No) Vehicle program, which funds the development of transit buses and infrastructure that use advanced fuel technologies. CUMTD will produce hydrogen on-site partially from renewable sources.
