In the wake of the Chevy Volt presentation by GM, my "plug-in hybrid" google alert has filled my inbox with reports from other automakers about their PHEV projects. 50,000 grants of $10,000 to purchasers of plug-in cars might just drive the market. The buzz about the Volt has generated automaker PR reactions. One big corporate "ME TOO!"

Elon himself mentioned during the unveiling that Tesla will be gobbling up much of the world’s lithium supply with plans to produce 500,000 EVs per year. “In In order to produce a half million cars per year•we would basically need to absorb the entire world’s lithium-ion production.” Remember—this is one man, one company.

Grants of between £2,000 and £5,000 will be available toordinary motorists to encourage them to buy electric or otherultra-low-carbon cars. The grants will not be available until 2011 and the detail of how they will beallocated and which cars will qualify has still to be worked out. Car buyers were less enthusiastic.
