Furthermore, changing the battery pack on say a Toyota Prius often costs a fortune, at least in most European countries, so such cars better be VERY cheap, but they’re not. Many of the first Prius hybrids that were released are still running strong on their NiMH batteries after 100,000+ miles.

Lutz is a man given to hyperbole — called global warming "a crock of shit" — but in this case, hes right. If you build a car as a "kit car" with no real factory, then yes, it will never be an economic success. Toyota Prius modders have already been adding larger batteries so the vehicle can run on battery power.
