PowerGenix, the developer of nickel-zinc (NiZn) rechargeable batteries ( earlier post ), has signed a product evaluation contract with HELLA, a Tier 1 supplier to major automotive manufacturers worldwide. Plug-in and fully electric cars operate between 200 and 800 volts. The high voltage systems pose little to no risk of electric shock, either while driving or recharging. Without gasoline, today’s transportation fails. Lithium, nickel metal hydrides and even advanced lead acid products are now capable of great energy storage and have strong recycle lives. Consumer confidence in electric transportation is growing – aided in no small part by $4 to $5 gallons of gasoline.

The MiEV runs on a lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged in seven or so hours on a 240-volt line. The Chevy Volt is going to count on an overnight charge from a standard wall outlet. There are choices for 110 volt versus 220 volt, slow versus quick charges, and solar options. By 2011 look for a larger THINK Ox.
