There have been vigorous debates pro and con in the United States and elsewhere over whether electric grids can support EVs at scale. Palo Alto’s government has set a very aggressive Sustainability and Climate Action Plan with a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to 80 percent below the 1990 level by the year 2030.

The electrical and computer engineering senior design project team is working with the North Carolina State civil, construction, and environmental engineering and biological and agricultural engineering departments to implement the solution. Their Project DIANA uses a drone to detect gas concentrations in the air.

The vehicles and infrastructure being funded include the use of natural and renewable gas, propane, ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, and hybrid technologies. The program includes the installation of 10 alternative fuel refueling sites (two B20, one Electric Recharging, and seven CNG). Total DOE award: $15,000,000.
