Supported by a $3-million California Energy Commission grant, the companies are working to convert a fleet of six, Class-6 International armored trucks into “Zero Emission with Range Extension” vehicles—PHEV trucks that operate with electricity and renewable natural gas (RNG). The CNG storage tanks are roof-mounted.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

Volvo hit a new record with 22,266 electrified vehicles (including PHEVs) sold last month, accounting for 44% of total sales. It will be available in a single-motor extended range and twin-motor performance version. The extended-range model will feature up to 275 miles driving range. 0 to 60 mph sprint.

The Cadillac Converj extended-range electric vehicle Concept uses the Voltec platform. GM expects the technology to be in the market within 10 years and for a vehicle to operate in HCCI mode during low load urban driving all the way up to 60 mph on a flat surface. The Audi A3 e-tron can be recharged in about nine hours with a 230-volt household socket. It powers the car from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 11.2 seconds and on up to a top speed of 145 km/h (90 mph). In efficiency mode, which is designed for maximum range, the output of the electric motor is limited to 50 kW (68 hp).

Plug-in hybrids differ from hybrids on the road today in that they can go longer distances on battery power and can be recharged via electrical outlets. The Whip is a two-seater that can travel at a top speed of 35 mph for 40 miles per charge; it sells for around $19,000. GM calls the Volt an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV.
