Along with Tedd Abramson’s Zero Truck in San Diego and Smith Trucks in London, we now have EVI (I keep wanting to write that as EV1:~). The trucks can be supplied with lithium phosphate batteries (right) from Valence Technologies, or lead-acid batteries from Trojan. Lead-acid batteries would provide less range.

Lithium, nickel metal hydrides and even advanced lead acid products are now capable of great energy storage and have strong recycle lives. The first step was the hybrid, which proved to the world that electric power can reduce gas consumption. We were successful with this before – remember the EV1?)

The 2011 start date has been chosen to coincide with theexpected introduction of a wider variety of electric and plug-in hybrid carsin Britain. Witha 60-mile range, most felt the need to recharge after 30 miles or so. How far hybrids will be encouraged in the new government initiative remains tobe seen.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles.
