In the UK, Hyundai Motor has launched a gasoline and diesel scrappage and trade-in scheme that offers up to £5,000 (US$6,416) off the price of a new model and seeks to improve air quality across the UK by making it easier and more affordable to drive a new, lower emission car. i10 will also benefit from £1,500 saving.

New cars bought through the UK’s scrappage incentive scheme , which began in May, emit on average 10.9% Scrappage buyers were also three times more likely than average to buy the smallest class of car—minis such as the Smart Fortwo—and a third more cars bought through the scheme were larger superminis such as the Hyundai i10.

The much derided scrappage scheme in the UK has started to benefit new car registrations for June 09. in June, however private individual registrations actually increased by approx 4% giving a much needed boost to several carmakers such as Ford, Kia, and Hyundai that have all experienced a growth in new car sales through June.

The Government’s car scrappage scheme has got off to a flying start as the end of its first week draws to a close. According to Hyundai, their dealers have been surprised by the array of cars which have been scrapped in exchange for more environmentally friendly i10 and i120s.

The scrappage scheme has put the car industry on track to meet the EU target of 130g/km of CO2 by 2012. Toyota’s achievements stem from its decision to drop three models from its UK line-up that had higher emissions – the MR2, Previa and the Celica. km and Audi, which has cut its emissions by 9.6 per cent to 158.2g/km.
