The extreme valve temperatures experienced on today’s highly boosted downsized engines can lead to reduced valve fatigue life and critical valve guide and stem seal temperatures, resulting in the need for expensive valve steel alloys. A combination of HTC and TIM technologies reduced peak inlet valve head temperatures by between 26 and 32°C.

Continuing Opel’s strategy of downsizing, a new 103 kW/140hp 1.4 A die cast, structural aluminum oil pan adds further stiffness and provides further noise reduction. The coolant thermostat and the oil pump are electronically controlled to improve engine heat up. Under-skirt piston oil cooling is a further addition.

The system comprises a deactivation rocker arm and oil control valve. When engine conditions are right, for example in highway cruise, the engine computer gives a command to the oil control valve and the unneeded cylinders shut down to save fuel. New Engine Valves.
