I wish the thing was for sale as-is. Merc wants the electric smart to perform badly, to have a short range and little power, so that it dosent eat up other products in the lineup. Competition is going to force them to produce a comfortable, usable, extended range EV for that price, and I will just have to wait.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. 1,000 pre-orders for small production runs in 2009 and 2010starting 4th quarter 2009.

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. The extended-range version will be focused on retail customers.
