Volvo Cars has acquired a stake in mobile EV rapid charging company FreeWire Technologies ( earlier post ) via the Volvo Cars Tech Fund. FreeWire is a San Francisco-based company that has been a pioneer in flexible fast-charging technology for electric cars. kW or DC fast charging at 50 kW.

As part of a new package of product updates, Volvo Cars has improved both the range (WLTP) and charging for the all-electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge compared with the outgoing model year, increasing range by as much as 60 kilometers on some variants. A 10-80% charge takes approximately 34 minutes using a 130kW DC public charger.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge, the company’s first fully electric vehicle, will carry an MSRP of $53,990 when it arrives in US showrooms later this year. In about 40 minutes, the 78 kWh battery can be charged to approximately 80% of its capacity on a 150 kW DC fast-charger. State and local incentives could add further benefits.
