The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded power management company Eaton $4.9 million for a program to reduce the cost and complexity of deploying direct-current (DC) fast electric vehicle charging infrastructure (EVCI). Eaton, NCSU and Pitt are collaborating on the technical development of the solid-state transformer.

Eaton Corporation is collaborating with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) on a prototype integrated solar-assisted electric vehicle charging station to be erected at EPRI’s research laboratory in Knoxville, Tenn. All subsystems are linked by being grid-tied.

The US Department of Energy announced $35 million in awards for 12 projects that find new ways to harness medium-voltage electricity for applications in industry, transportation, on the grid and beyond. BREAKERS projects will develop DC devices that prevent electric arcing, a safety hazard, while handling large amounts of power and voltage.

The new Lightning Electric LEV100 model will offer peak motor power of 295 horsepower with a 2-speed Eaton automatic transmission, providing 1821 lb-ft (2,469 N·m) in first gear and a 65-mph governed top speed. Zeem is product-agnostic and focused on vehicle options that meet fleet transportation requirements.
