The EDISON (Electric Vehicles in a Distributed and Integrated Market using Sustainable Energy and Open Networks) research consortium will seek to match power generation from wind turbines on the island of Bornholm, Denmark, with the power consumption of charging plug-in electric cars. The project is partly funded by the government of Denmark.

Their solution to the cost of thenew-generation batteries is to separate them from the car itself. Buyerswill purchase the car – at about the same price as a conventional model –but lease the batteries from a third-party energy supplier for a monthly feeequivalent to the fuel costs for an economical petrol or diesel car.

Better Place is building stations in San Francisco, Hawaii, Israel, and Denmark to swap out 1,000 pound batteries in a car wash type set up. Considering the cost of batteries, these are disposable cars. market b y the end of 2009. There are at least a half dozen different technologies to power cars with electricity under construction.
