He was born in 1921 in Azerbaijan, then part of the Soviet Union, and moved to Iran at age 10. Zadeh received an electrical engineering degree from the University of Tehran in 1942. But instead of taking the comfortable route—becoming a professor in Iran—he emigrated to the United States. “I Research in Iran was nonexistent.”
