Fraunhofer IWS in Dresden, Germany will hold its 3rd annual workshop on Lithium-sulfur batteries from 12-13 November 2014. As with the prior Lithium-Sulfur Battery Workshops in 2012 and 2013, this year’s symposium will bring together an international audience of scientists and industrial customers.

An NREL report summarizing the 2011 Alkaline Membrane Fuel Cell Workshop noted that: In comparison with PEMFCs, AMFCs offer the advantage of avoiding Pt or Pt group metal (PGM) electrocatalysts, one of the primary limitations in the commercial deployment of fuel cells. … An alternative is the alkaline environment of the AEMFC.

Comparison of conventional lithium-ion battery and all-solid-state lithium battery at the cell, stack, and pack levels with potentials for increased energy density.

Mineral market analysis company Benchmark estimates that at least 74 lithium, 55 cobalt, 64 nickel and 97 graphite mines, as well as 54 new synthetic graphite factories will be needed by 2035 to meet the global demand for EV and renewable energy storage batteries. Each mine and factory will need hundreds of workers to operate them.

For example, batteries at the end of their life can be repurposed as energy storage solutions and still deliver up to 70% of their output.
