Among electric vehicles from automakers that report specific sales numbers for their EV models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV was tops in the US in 2021 with 27,3707 units sold. Ford has announced plans to increase production of the Mach-E at its Mexico plant 3X over the next two years which suggests sales could reach at least 40,000 in 2022.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.
