Spontaneous formation of hollow structures in alloy anode crystals can improve battery stability

Green Car Congress

Too much ion flow causes anode materials to swell and then shrink during charge-discharge cycles, causing mechanical degradation that shortens battery life. The small test batteries we fabricated showed promising charge-discharge performance, so we would like to evaluate the materials in larger batteries. —Matthew McDowell.

Study identifies main culprit behind lithium metal battery failure; counters conventional wisdom

Green Car Congress

The answer has to do with how lithium deposits on the anode when the cell is charging. Right: Porous, tortuous, whisker-like microstructure which lowers Coulombic efficiency. Image courtesy of Meng lab/ Nature. Some electrolytes cause lithium to form micro- and nanostructures that boost cell performance.
