Buoyed by the US government’s CARS (“Cash for Clunkers”) program, US auto sales slowed their decline in the US in July, dropping on 12.1% Passenger car sales dropped 10.6% to 554, 527 units, while light truck sales dropped 14.1% Monthly sales of hybrids.

When the Cash for Clunkers (CARS) program here in the U.S. ended, I wondered how many of the buyers who took advantage of the rebate chose to purchase a hybrid. Buying a hybrid made the most sense, in my view, especially with the slight surge in gas prices just before the program launched.

Compared to the engine and transmission technologies discussed above, there has been far less growth in the production shares of hybrid and diesel powertrains and cylinder deactivation (CD). The number of non-hybrid SUVs that achieved 25 mpg increased from four in MY 2008 to 17 in MY 2013, more than a four-fold increase.

The President is proposing to transform the existing $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles into a rebate that will be available to all consumers immediately at the point of sale, similar to “Cash for Clunkers”. The Recovery Act is also supporting the deployment of infrastructure for advanced technology vehicles.

A new Rasmussen telephone poll found that 81% of Americans oppose an “ increase the tax on gasoline by a large amount ” as a way to encourage the purchase of more fuel-efficient cars. 15% of men support a big tax increase on gasoline to push sales of fuel-efficient cars, compared to 6% of women. Only 18% supported a mileage tax.
