The California High-Speed Rail Authority Board unanimously approved an application for more than $4.5 billion in federal stimulus funding for engineering, design and construction on the state’s high-speed train system (earlier post) —generating an investment of $9.1 billion when state matching funds are added.

And then, with transmission complete and the triggering stimulus gone, the system would shut down and return to a sleep or fully powered-off state. In its most common form, it uses an incoming stimulus, at some minimum threshold value, to move and close a mechanical switch, which in turn activates an electronic circuit.
