Redwood Materials, founded by Tesla co-founder and former CTO JB Straubel ( earlier post ), is launching the most comprehensive electric vehicle battery recycling program, beginning in California, to establish efficient, safe and effective recovery pathways for end-of-life hybrid and electric vehicle battery packs.

Panasonic has emerged as the leader thanks to its partnership with Tesla, capturing 39% of the plug-in vehicle battery market, overtaking NEC (27% market share) and LG Chem (9%) in 2013. Nonetheless, in terms of demand by OEM, hybrid leader Toyota (28%) edges EV providers Tesla Motors (24%) and Renault-Nissan (21%).

But things changed for Cox when GM came out with a new version of the EV1 with a non-toxic nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery with more than twice the energy of the original lead acid battery. It is aggressively in talks with Portland General Electric Plug-In Charging Stations , ( POR ) and other states including Michigan, and California that are scrambling to offer incentives. They are either glorified golf cart city cars like this one or they are only for the very wealthy like the Tesla. Electric cars a still a joke.
