The VSS system consists of two main parts, a control unit (PEU - Power Electric Unit), and the power storage unit (ESS - Energy Storage System). The excess energy required for restarting the engine is stored in this unit, which is recharged by the vehicle’s battery. There is no regen in this basic application.

Please feel free to tell us what you believe to be the benefits of some of the various recharging modes mentioned above in the comments section below. Obviously, with replaceable battery packs, they can both be charged at the optimal time and always be hanging around to serve as valuable electrical power storage for the grid.
