Initial sales of the 2014 Cadillac ELR extended range electric luxury coupe ( earlier post ) will begin in January in all major US metropolitan areas. With an all-electric range of about 35 highway miles (56 km), and a total range in excess of 300 miles (482 km), the ELR offers fuel economy of 82 MPGe, Cadillac estimates.

The Spark EV battery is built on a dedicated production line at Brownstown, which also manufactures complete battery packs for the Chevrolet Volt, Opel Ampera and Cadillac ELR. Range will remain at an EPA-rated 82 miles (132 km) and MPGe will remain at 119 (equivalent to 2.0 Battery module for 2015 Spark EV battery pack.

The morning session started out with an hour long press conference, the highlight being the unveiling of the Volt’s 230 mpg preliminary EPA city fuel economy finding ( earlier post ), as well as a tour showing selected elements from the studios of the four GM North American brands: Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac.

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. If every car accepts 2 or 4 or 6 of these universal packs then true economies of scale can kick in in their manufacture. my idea is that it would work the way propane tanks work now.
