capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor is C1+C2+…….Cn, As holding device capacitors are able to retain the voltage/value even if there is an interruption in supply. Capacitors are also used to provide an alternative source of direct current supply (Emergency supply) for tripping in the event of main battery failure.
