The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $5 million to the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) to help Southern truckers and small businesses to buy cleaner big rigs. About 8 million are exposed to air quality that violates the federal standards for particulate matter.

Almost half the new buses are fueled by cleaner-burning propane or compressed natural gas; the others are cleaner-burning diesel engines. Nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxides are precursor chemicals that, combined with sunlight, create ground-level ozone. Net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 are the governor’s goal.

The cap-and-trade program also works in concert with other measures, such as standards for cleaner vehicles, low-carbon fuels, renewable electricity and energy efficiency, and complements and supports California’s existing efforts to reduce smog-forming and toxic air pollutants.

In a separate action, the California Energy Commission approved $4,979,070 through the current ARFVT program to projects that will support increased numbers of cleaner, alternative fuel vehicles on California roadways.
