Researchers from the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) have developed and demonstrated secondary (i.e., rechargeable) battery cells based on a fluoride shuttle. The team also presented the work at the recent 220 th meeting of the Electrochemical Society (ECS) in Boston. Maximilian Fichtner and Munnangi Anji Reddy.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. One wonders if the recent headway at MIT in building lithium ion cells using ?virus? The car is expected to cost around $40,000.
