Mercedes-Benz is scrapping extended-range EV powertrains after tests of prototypes, according to an Autocar report citing an anonymous source with knowledge of the matter. But other automakers have had less success with range extenders.

The alternative-fuel car evolved to reduce exhaust emissions and other problems derived from burning fossil fuels. The so-called Extended Range Electric Vehicle or EREV or BEVx.
