Volvo Cars is tripling electric car manufacturing capacity at its plant in Ghent, Belgium as it prepares to meet fast growing demand for its Recharge line-up of chargeable cars. The plant already builds the XC40 Recharge, the company’s first fully electric car, as well as a plug-in hybrid version of the XC40.

Volvo Cars reported global sales of 48,520 in January, up 2% compared to the same month last year. Sales of Volvo Cars´ Recharge models of fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars increased by 31% in January year-on-year, accounting for 40.7% of all Volvo cars sold globally during the month.

Following the introduction of the XC40 Recharge and now the C40 Recharge, Volvo Cars will roll out several additional electric models in coming years. By 2025, Volvo Cars aims for 50% of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids.

All its European plants have had a climate-neutral electricity supply since 2008, while the engine plant in Skövde, Sweden, was the first in the company’s network to become completely climate-neutral in 2018. These and other measures are part of the climate plan Volvo Cars launched late last year.

Polestar says that the new Polestar 2 is the first electric car to compete in the marketplace around the Tesla Model 3, with the range starting at a guide price of €39,900 (US$45,177). In the future, Polestar 3 will join the portfolio as a fully electric performance SUV.

A new Polestar electric car is destined to replace the Polestar 2 , the EV that started it all. Unveiled in 2019, the Polestar 2 put the brand on a new path toward becoming an all-electric automaker. The Polestar 2 is the brand’s first fully electric vehicle after the Polestar 1, a hybrid with up to 78 miles of electric range.

Volvo and its Chinese parent Geely are very serious about selling cars that plug in.
