Dominion Virginia Power has added two plug-in electric hybrid cars and two hybrid-powered bucket trucks to its fleet as part of its efforts to determine the impact of plug-in vehicles on electricity demand and to find ways to conserve energy and reduce vehicle emissions.

Although electric vehicles have lower tailpipe emissions than gasoline powered vehicles, the changes in emissions associated with vehicle electrification on a life cycle basis will depend on the emissions associated with the operations of the power plants used to charge the battery.

The existing Prius has a carbon-dioxide figure of 89g/km but it is stillunlikely to be classified as an ultra-low-carbon vehicle. Hence thedevelopment of a plug-in Prius, which will operate most of the time onelectricity and produce less carbon dioxide. Is it becuase US market prefers a "home" product?
