About 4 million children worldwide develop asthma each year because of inhaling nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) air pollution, according to an open-access study published in The Lancet Planetary Health by researchers at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health (Milken Institute SPH).

Nitrous oxide is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change and stratospheric ozone destruction. Human activities, including fossil fuel combustion and intensive agriculture, have increased the availability of nitrogen in the environment. The findings, the authors hope, will lead to more effective mitigation strategies.
