The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) received a $1 million U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant to continue their research in developing low-cost, high-strength carbon fiber. The center is home to the largest carbon fiber spinline at any university in North America.

In order for low-cost electricity from coal-fired power plants to remain available, the DOE said, economical methods for capturing and storing the greenhouse gas emissions from these plants must be developed. The work will be managed by the Office of Fossil Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory.
