A handful of bidirectional-capable EVs are available today, and automakers are quickly implementing the technology. The idea of vehicle-to-grid is that you are storing energy at the end of the distribution system, so you can absorb those peaks. BMW was involved with the V2G pilot of the University of Delaware many years ago.

Another strikingly different concept evidenced by the PHEV is that it is essentially a large, portable battery that can store energy gathered during one part of the day, and then use it later to power not only itself but also the vehicle owner’s home. And even greater ranges can be expected soon.

The hybrid models available today use lead-acid ornickel-metal hydride batteries that are are proven, reliable, and fairlycheap, but their limited storage capacity means that the cars’ driving rangeusing electricity alone is short. So the car uses an electrical store to power the drive motor. to charge overnight.

Also, besides giving you the ability to charge at night when most utility rates are lower, future vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology may allow you to sell some of your stored energy back to the utilities. Currently, there are some industrial facilities that use battery swapping to replenish the energy stores of electric forklifts.
