China’s State Council has published a plan to develop the domestic energy-saving and new energy vehicle industry, which includes battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles and fuel cell vehicles. Experts urged greater efforts on China’s part to boost development of the new energy vehicle industry.

As we have quoted several times electric cars are great but battery-operated electric cars have a few disadvantages as well. Fuel cells, like stem cells in medical science, are a new technology in the automobile industry. There are still outstanding concerns about how and where to dispose of end-of-life batteries.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. Ive found it facinating how car commercials changed the main MPG number they promoted before gas went over $4 a gallon as city miles. It is 12 years later.
