Toyotas Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries are considered "non-hazardous waste" [See "high voltage electrical systems" ]. Lithium-Ion batteries share many characteristics with NiMH. Honda Insight, Civic and Accord use an entirely different design: the electric motor never runs without the gasoline engine running at the same time.
